Dr. Phillip Romero

Dr. Phillip Romero, Former Chief Economist of California
Philip J. Romero is the former Chief Economist, State of California and Dean of the College of Business and Economics at California State University, Los Angeles. 
 
During the Cold War, Romero was a defense policy specialist at the RAND Corporation, where he worked for the secretary of defense, the CIA, and the U.S. Air Force and Army..
 
From 1991 to 1999, Romero served as California's chief economist. He oversaw nearly half of state government, and was the author and lead implementer of key improvements that transformed California’s economic performance among the 50 states from last to first.  He was an adviser to President Bush’s 2000 and 2004 campaigns. He served more recently as business dean and professor of finance at the University of Oregon.
 
Dr. Romero is co-author of six books and is also frequently published or interviewed in major national media including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, Business Week, PBS’s News Hour with Jim Lehrer,and NPR.  His latest book is How to Protect Your Money from the End of the American Empire, forthcoming in 2010. He earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in Policy Analysis from the RAND Graduate School.
